How to Read a Peptide Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report that shows what is actually in a vial. Knowing how to read one is the single best way to tell a reputable research peptide supplier from a bad one.
HPLC PURITY
High-performance liquid chromatography separates the contents of a sample. The result is shown as a chromatogram with peaks; purity is the main peak’s area as a percentage of all peaks. Research-grade peptides should test at ≥98–99%. Every PrimeSyns compound is verified at ≥99%.
MASS SPECTROMETRY
HPLC tells you how pure a sample is, but not what it is. Mass spec confirms identity by measuring molecular weight — the observed mass should match the peptide’s theoretical mass closely.
RED FLAGS
- No COA available, or only on request
- A COA with no lot number, or a lot that does not match your vial
- Purity claims with no chromatogram
- Identical-looking reports across different compounds
